Ewen Jones, Member for Herbert, said new Department of Climate Change data proved that major electricity price hikes were on the way for Townsville households.
“The latest Department of Climate Change data indicates that electricity generators are going to be sent a $3.9 billion carbon tax bill and this bill will be paid for by households and businesses,” Mr Jones said.
“Treasury has already said that the carbon tax will push electricity prices up by 10 per cent and gas prices by 9 per cent – and these increases will go up and up as the carbon tax goes up.
“The electricity generators are warning they will ration production and push up prices as a way of clawing back the billions they will pay for the carbon tax.
“It’s not just electricity prices going up – this will impact on the prices of every business that uses electricity.
“I have received calls from worried local retailers who are being advised that their power costs will increase by between 20% and 50%, depending on their usage.
“Small business will not get any compensation and will be forced to pass the increased costs on to the people who can afford it least – the consumer.
“The Government talks big on compensation, but this carbon tax is the world’s most expensive, poorly designed, thought bubble of a money churn that will hurt everyday people.
“I voted against the carbon tax in the Parliament because it will hurt Townsville households and cost jobs. We opposed the tax in opposition and we will rescind it in government.”
