Member for Herbert Ewen Jones is calling on the Townsville Mayoral candidates to support itemising the cost of the carbon tax to council on residents’ rates notices.
Mr Jones said the ratepayers of Townsville deserved to know how much the Labor Government’s carbon tax was costing them.
Townsville City Council has previously estimated the carbon tax will cost from $5 million per year, with retiring Mayor Les Tyrell stating the council would have to look at either cutting services or raising rates to meet the expense.
“Labor’s carbon tax will seep into every aspect of our everyday lives,” Mr Jones said.
“The ratepayers of Townsville have a right to know how much of their rates will go towards paying this destructive tax.
“The Newman LNP Government has committed to itemising the Carbon Tax on electricity bills.
“I am urging the Townsville Mayoral candidates to do the same for rates notices.”
Charities are the latest victims of the carbon tax, with the Salvation Army yesterday claiming the cost will put social programs at risk.
“This tax has become farcical,” Mr Jones said.
“The neediest people in our community will suffer as a result of Labor’s poor policy design.
“The last thing families, pensioners, charities, businesses and councils can afford right now is a carbon tax.”
