Townsville residents impacted by Tuesday morning’s devastating tornado-like storm can seek personal hardship assistance from the Commonwealth and State governments through disaster relief programs.
Mr Jones said Natural Disaster Relief and Recovery Arrangements were available to help residents meet a range of expenses incurred in the immediate aftermath of the storm.
The Personal Hardship Assistance Scheme (PHD) and the Essential Service Safety and Reconnection Scheme has been made available for the suburbs of Vincent, Aitkenvale and Garbutt.
The emergency assistance payments are administered by the Queensland Department of Communities and they can be contacted on 1800 173 349.
About 30 homes lost their roofs and several businesses suffered major damage in the terrifying storm that struck the Vincent, Aitkenvale, Pimlico and Garbutt areas.
Mr Jones commended the way the Townsville community had pulled together to help their neighbours and mates, who copped the brunt of the unexpected storm.
In Canberra this week for Parliamentary sittings, Mr Jones said he was shocked to see the images and hear the stories of residents affected by this freak event.
Information on the range of assistance available can be found at www.disasterassist.gov.au.
