Blakey’s funding a victory for businesses and motorists
Federal Member for Herbert Ewen Jones has today welcomed the news that Blakey’s Crossing will receive full funding under an LNP State Government.
“At last … someone in State politics gets it,” Mr Jones said.
“This Labor State Government has pulled more than $100m in land tax alone from the Bohle industrial state redevelopment.
“Flood-proofing the main industrial artery that links the Bohle with the rest of Townsville is long overdue and it’s about time we got our fair share.
“My biggest concern throughout this debate has been that the ratepayer should not have to pay for what was a federal highway.
“This is a win for everyone in Townsville. A win for the people who have called radio stations to complain, for the people who signed my petition and came to the Fix Blakey’s rally, for the people who wrote letters to their local politicians and for the media who have kept up the pressure on governments.
“At least Campbell Newman can see that fixing Blakey’s will address a problem that affects businesses and thousands of motorists, including residents of the Northern Beaches commuting to work.”
Ewen Jones kick-started the Fix Blakey’s Crossing campaign after his election in 2010 when he promised a Tony Abbott-led Government would fully fund flood-proofing Blakey’s Crossing.
He has spoken in Federal Parliament on many occasions about the need to flood-proof Blakey’s Crossing.
